I finally broke out the Space Hulk boxed set and assembled everything. I got the game thanks to my buddy Aaron when it first came out. But I never assembled it or played it – since I was so caught up in my projects with 40k. Well our Dark Heresy game fell through today and I thought, “Hey! Let’s finally bust out Space Hulk!”

Geoff brought over his copy and he, Gary, Steve and myself played two games simultaneously.

Now I have to tell you I have never played Space Hulk before – any version of it. But man this was a great game! I can see why people liked it so much. I am looking forward to breaking it out again and playing through more missions beyond the first two now!

I am starting a Campaign in the next week or so and then we are going to begin covering it on The Independent Characters.

So with that in mind, I finally put paint to brush (or airbrush initially as the case may be) and got to work on my Planetary Empires Campaign Tiles. Overall I am VERY pleased with how they came out. The entire project took me about a day and a half to complete. Amazing considering most of the tiles are double sided.

Now that the tiles are complete I really am excited about playing in this campaign. It should be a lot of fun!

So here’s the step by step photos of the completion:

Ok so I picked up two of these models today and I am really pleased with the level of detail on the models themselves. There are also (as you have probably seen from the sprue pictures on every site out there) many options with which to kit out the model. Very cool stuff. Looks like it goes together very straightforward as well – while offering a lot of diversity.

But here is the interesting thing….

The DP now comes on a Monstrous Creature Base… same size as a Carnifex now. The old DP came on a Terminator sized base. This makes more since but is an interesting change.

Either way – very happy with the purchase… I began putting them together this evening after I got home, and to be honest, the hardest part about putting these models together was the choice of how to equip them. There are so many great combinations of arms, chest, and other pieces that it was hard to settle.

Here are the results:

I literally have enough pieces left over that, with some clever greenstuff work, I think I can make a third! Look for that in a couple of weeks.

Well I haven’t posted in awhile. Mainly because I have been so busy with The Independent Characters Podcast. If you haven’t checked that out yet – please do!

That said I did complete a number of projects recently. I have done the following:

Khorne Daemon Prince (Painted – used as my Khorne Greater Daemon)

Kharne The Betrayer (Painted)

Three Land Raiders (Black on all the components that were red and needed detailing)

Skyshield Landing Platform (Assembled and primered)

Bastion (Assembled and primered)

Played a crap-ton of games. (Most of which I lost)

Hosted a mini-tournament at my house (10 players)

I think that’s it. Overall pretty good progress though.

I really do need to complete a bunch of Khorne Berzerkers – but after watching the painting tutorial of Space Wolves by Beasts of War… man I am getting the itch to paint those guys.

Stay on target Carl… Stay on Target!

Here are some pics now that I am done.

Basically I have just touched up a couple of the guys – and added the Nurgle “Fly” Icon to the Rhinos. I am pretty pleased with how it came out actually!

See you after the Kubla Con Tournament.

You ever have a rhino blow up? Of course you have. The rules then state that the area the rhino occupied becomes “difficult terrain” (not to mention the models inside take a str 4 wound). We have often used the plastic GW craters to represent this. They work pretty good. Some are slightly smaller or bigger, and as vehicles blow up near each other it can get somewhat crowded…

Well today I was floating around at Game Kastle in Santa Clara, when I stumbled upon this new Micro Art Studio “Difficult Terrain” resin piece…

At $15 a piece that’s a bit of a tough sell but they are about the base size of a rhino and are littered with what appear to be pieces of a tank. Overall I thought the idea was pretty clever.

They come in two different pieces and can be seen in better detail here:

Still painting my World Eaters Army. Those of you who listen to The Independent Characters Podcast - will know that I have played them four times. So far my tally is 1-2-1. Not too shabby out of the box.

I have the first two coats of different reds on all three Land Raiders in the list and I have started applying the black to the details before I start going over them in their various colors. I have two of the three Land Raiders at about the point in the picture above at the moment. I’m not hurrying through it at all.

Once these are complete I am torn between the Kharn or Daemon Prince model… I’ll finish these first though.

Today was the first day I rolled out my new World Eaters list… so how did it go?

Well my first game was against Josh and his Tournament Optimized Blood Angels list. I didn’t fair so well. Though I can’t necessarily blame the build of my force build for that. I led my poor Berzerkers astray and went for an assault at the get go that left me 1/8th of an inch short. Not a good sign. The resulting destruction of my first Land Raider and the Berzerker squad left me reeling.

A few short rounds later it was over – but at least before that bad leadership and horrible dice rolling disaster was over – I got to use my Kharn The Betrayer model to wipe out one whole squad of scouts and then single handedly destroy a Librarian Dreadnought. That was fun… but led to overconfidence I will talk about later on.

In the end I was pretty much tabled by Josh – but considering it was my first attempt at this out of the starting gate… I’ll call it a learning experience. Josh was a really fun opponent and we had quite a few laughs during the game.

My second game was against Nick and his borrowed Ultramarines. How did that go you ask? Better.

To be fair this isn’t Nicks actual army – however it is beautifully painted. He cobbled together a list from what he had available. Quite honestly Nick is a much better player than I am but I felt I at least “brought it” a bit here for him.

The game ended up in the highest Kill Point tie I have ever seen (for our group) with the end result being 8 to 8. I had a blast. Nick was a fun opponent and in then end when the final death toll was tallied up – we both cheered and high-fived at the awesome destruction. I guess Khorne wins in the end though since it was all slaughter and blood!

Remember where I said I got overconfident with Kharn The Betrayer? Yeah. He is awesome and all – but not badass enough to take on a squad of Thunderhammer/Stormshield Terminators… he got “doubled out” on the damage and did an amazing job blocking a Thunderhammer with his face.

Overall though – a BLAST of a game! Thanks to the crew from Endgame for coming down!

Tuttle out.

Well it’s been awhile but not due to lack of progress! Not only have we started The Independent Characters Podcast, but I have been hard at work on my Forgeworld World Eaters army.

Here is a really crappy picture of it nearly all assembled:

The only things not pictured here are the Greater Summoned Daemon (on order from Forgeworld), the Lesser Summoned Daemons (which are completely painted and finished), and the third Land Raider (yeah I know… ) which is still in the box in the background there.

All in all I am starting to get pretty excited about the progress I am making here. Still planning on playing my Death Guard at Kubla Con though. I think that will always be my favorite…

It’s been about a month since my last blog entry – so where have I been? Well I’ve been working on producing my latest project; The Independent Characters! A podcast about the Warhammer 40k Hobby. Geoff and I have invested time and money in making the best podcast we can – and our first episode is pretty darn good if I do say so myself!

We would love for you to take a listen at The Independent Characters. Please feel free to provide any feedback you want. We are looking for ways to improve. Our goal is to make you feel included in our rather large gaming group.

You can subscribe through iTunes or Podcast Alley.

Other than that – I have been working on my Khorne Berzerkers from Forgeworld. More to come on that soon… they are nearly finished being assembled!

Tuttle out.
